A Map Project: Group Exhibition at City Gallery
60 Artists and 60 Maps Exploring Themes of Land Use
We invite you to our upcoming City Gallery Exhibition and Auction to support the youth education programming at Earthlab in Southeast San Diego, a volunteer-maintained plant garden and the home of education programs of Groundwork San Diego.
Sixty artists will participate by transforming a printed USGS topographic map of San Diego County, which will be repurposed from an installation at the San Diego International Airport. The artists were given a theme of “land use” According to the US EPA, “‘Land use’ is the term used to describe the human use of land. It represents the economic and cultural activities (e.g., agricultural, residential, industrial, mining, and recreational uses) that are practiced at a given place.”
Restoration is imperative for healing the earth, but reciprocity is imperative for long-lasting, successful restoration. Like other mindful practices, ecological restoration can be viewed as an act of reciprocity in which humans exercise their caregiving responsibility for the ecosystems that sustain them. We restore the land, and the land restores us.
