The Other Side: Solo Exhibition at the Rose gallery

Overview

The James Alan Rose Gallery presents The Other Side, an exhibition of paintings, drawings and prints by Melanie Taylor. Artworks in The Other Side depict incidental spaces within the natural environment, a point of view that displaces the viewer’s position to the inbetween.

Characterized by gestural mark-making, the works evoke a sense of place with reference to memory and perception. They sit in the margin between the real and the imagination, challenging us to consider our relationship with the image and the environment. Driven by immersion in the active landscape and the importance of environmental preservation, the works aim to encourage a thoughtful response to our vulnerable ecosystem. The paintings are visual translations informed by drawing from observation and reference light, space and touch in their process. The approach to painting is experimental and does not always refer to a specific place but is recognizable. The drawings are a direct response to seeing and understanding places visually. Within the works a coexistence of unpredictable and deliberate marks relates to the factual and uncontrollable character of nature. The images expand on the passage of time, the shifting natural environment, and what lies beyond the visible.
